I guess I should start by telling how all this began. I have had several friends that have had gastric bypass. Some friends were successful and some were not. I have been gaining weight since I started teaching school about 5 years ago. I have been big all my life...always fighting the battle to keep weight off. I have just noticed that every year since beginning teaching the clothes from the year before were tight. So, in December 2009, my Mom and I were talking about the problem and the fact that I was not getting any younger or thinner. She told be about a childhood friend that had gastric banding and had lost lots of weight. I followed up by speaking with that friend and got more information.
I began the process of getting approved in January 2010. I went to an initial meeting about weight loss surgery. Then went through all the insurance hoops. I had all but given up hope of actually having this procedure, when every thing finally fell in place. I got all my paperwork turned in and the insurance approved my surgery in June 2011. So, it took me about a year and a half to get through the process. My surgery date was June 27, 2011.
I am about 4 weeks out. I know I have lost 17 pounds since surgery. I have not weighed in about a week, so I am not sure if I have lost more. It has been an interesting journey. There are some things that I just can not get down. White bread is difficult for me, luckily I can eat flour tortillas. I try not to eat too much of that kind of stuff, but an occasional sandwich is always good. Most of the problems that I have had have been from taking too big a bite or being overly hungry. I am having to learn to slow down. Which is not that easy. I will try to post my before picture soon, as well as a photo for 1 month out.
